What is ESOS?

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory energy assessment scheme introduced by the UK Government to ensure that large organisations (including businesses, charities, academy chains etc.) are energy efficient. Eligible organisations meet one of the following criteria:

  • over 250 employees

  • turnover in excess of £44m AND an annual balance sheet total of more than £38m

  • an overseas company with over 250 employees in the UK

  • the company is part of a larger organisation which falls into any of the above categories.

The purpose of ESOS is to enable organisations to identify and implement energy savings which will in turn reduce their environmental impact (as well as saving money). At Sustainable Footprints, we help UK businesses grow in an efficient, compliant and sustainable way with our bespoke ESOS energy audits, consultation and guidance. How do you comply with ESOS?

In order to comply with ESOS Phase 3, you must quantify the energy consumption from your sites / buildings, fleet and industrial processes for a 12-month period which includes the date of 31st December 2022.

A sample of your buildings will need to have energy efficiency audits conducted on them. If your fleet and industrial processes account for more than 5% of your energy consumption each, you will also need to have audits undertaken across your fleet and industrial processes.

During the ESOS energy audit, a number of energy efficiency recommendations will be made. These aim to save you energy and money with the shortest payback possible.

Once your audit(s) are complete, you will need to get your ESOS report signed by a Director or Board Member. If you have not utilised a registered Lead ESOS Assessor to conduct your audit, you will have to have your audits verified before making your submission. Once everything is all signed off, you can then make your submission to the Environment Agency no later than 5th June 2024.
